Sexual Timing
The normal menstrual cycle length is 28 Days (plus or minus 4 days). Ovulation normally occurs 14 days prior to the next menstrual period. As a result many women with average cycle lengths can be confident of timing their most fertile days by simply subtracting 14 days from their average cycle length and then ensuring they have sex for several days either side of this date. For example: if a women has a 26 day cycle then she will most likely ovulated on day 12 of the cycle (day 1 of bleeding is day 1 of the cycle), she should therefore have regular sex from day 8 or 9 through to day 14 or 15 of the cycle. Likewise the most fertile day in a 32 day cycle is day 16, with sex from day 12 to day 20 to maximize the chance of pregnancy.
Sexual Frequency
How often to have sex in order to maximise your chance of getting pregnant is often debated. Put simply it is impossible to have sex too much. On the other hand you should not feel that you 'have to have sex'. It is entirely up to you - investing in you relationship as a couple by ensuring sex is enjoyable is always wise for you as an individual and your family as a whole. It is reasonable to have sex every second day around the time of ovulation to increase your chance of conceiving. There is no evidence that having sex every day will improve the likelihood of success as sperm can survive for up to 48 hours
Sexual Position
Fortunately, how you have sex does not influence the chance of getting pregnant. It is normal for fluid to fall out of the vagina after sex regardless of position.
A little help
It is possible to use either serial blood tests for the hormones Oestradiol, Luteinising Hormone (LH) and Progesterone to predict precisely the time of ovulation in advance. This requires 3 to 6 blood tests in the days preceding ovulation. Urinary testing of LH can be used alone but is less accurate. It is however very suitable for women with relatively regular cycles. Once the timing of ovulation has been calculated then couples can be advised on the best time to have sex or, if necessary, have artificial intrauterine insemination. This can be organized through Sydney IVF Newcastle. If timing is an issue due to relatively infrequent sexual intercourse, then ovulation tracking will certainly improve the chance of pregnancy.
